PWDs-focused nonprofit calls for inclusion in SDGs implementation in Nigeria

By ‘Seyifunmi Adebote

Edeh Catherine, founder of the Voice of Disabilities, a disability-focused nonprofit, who is also Nigeria’s first female deaf lawyer and ex Mandela Washington Fellow, Thursday called on individuals, groups and international agencies to always consider the inclusivity of people living with disabilities (PWDs) in whatsoever development projects or interventions they were embarking upon.

Edeh made this call while speaking at the monthly #SDGsStory hangout of the Nigerian Youths SDGs Network held at the Netherlands embassy in Abuja on Thursday, hosted by the Ambassador of the Royal Kingdom of Netherlands to Nigeria, Robert J. Petri.

Speaking at the event, Chelsey Buurman, the Second Secretary to the Netherlands Ambassador to Nigeria, enumerated some of the Dutch embassy’s programmes targeted at accommodating people with disabilities adding that a certain percentage of their interventions funds were targeted at achieving inclusivity.

The concept of “Leave No One Behind” is at the heart of the 17 United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 17 Global Goals and their 169 targets were built as plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity.
