“PTAs, SBMCs critically-important in meeting girls’ learning outcomes”

The programme manager for the second phase of the UK-Department for International Development-funded Educating Nigerian Girls In New Enterprise (ENGINE II) programme in Kano state, Mustapha Chiroma, has described Parent Teachers Associations (PTAs) and School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), as critically-important stakeholders in achieving required learning outcomes for in-school girls.

“Until you involve Parent Teachers Associations (PTAs) and School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) in the monitoring of education you won’t be able to achieve learning outcomes; they can help in monitoring learning sessions and attendance as well as ensuring teachers teach in accordance with the teaching modules,” said Chiroma.

He was speaking Tuesday at a quarterly stakeholders’ meeting with members of PTAs and SBMCs drawn from across the ENGINE II project Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kano state; the event was hosted by the Society for Women Development and Empowerment of Nigeria (SWODEN), the local implementing partner for the ENGINE II programme in Kano state.

“This is because most of them [members of PTAs/SBMCs] are educationists, so their involvement will ensure the judicious utilization of the support being provided by ENGINEII for the girls,” he said.

The ENGINE programme being implemented across the Nigerian states of Kano, Kaduna, Lagos and the FCT is working to ensure in-school girls successfully transition to the next phase of their education or complete their current education cycle and enter the workforce through enhanced learning experience, amongst others.
