Nigeria launches reproductive health tools for improving FP uptake

Nigeria’s Minister of Health Isaac Adewole, on Tuesday launched 3 sets of reproductive health tools that he said will add to the country’s body of knowledge on reproductive health, and subsequently improve decision-making in family planning,  which will ultimately contribute to reducing maternal mortality in the country.

“These documents will add to our body of knowledge and improve decision-making in family planning, which will contribute to reducing maternal mortality and improve the health of our women,” said Adewole in a speech read at the launch of the documents in Abuja. “The documents will set us on the path to achieving the major goal of improving women’s health.”

The three documents launched at the event were the DMPA-SC Strategy Plan; National Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications; as well as the Tool for Global Family Planning Van/Logistics Management Information System (GFP VAN/NA VISION)

In a goodwill message at the event, Titi Duro-Aina of UNFPA Nigeria said in the face of dwindling donor funding, reaching the targets of FP2020 would require innovative and efficient strategies.

“The GFP VAN will ensure sustainability and efficiency, DMPA-SC will ensure information about contraceptives reaches women and girls in hard-to-reach areas. UNFPA is committed to providing continues support to Nigeria towards achieving equitable access to sexual and reproductive health and maternal health services, aimed at reducing deaths among women and children,” said Duro-Aina.
