Danish investors partner Nigeria to boost Nigeria’s food and agriculture sector

The Danish minister for environment and food, Esben Lunde Larsen on Monday led a business delegation to Abuja, Nigeria where 15 Danish companies signed bilateral agreements with Nigerian investors aimed at boosting the country’s food and agriculture sector a boost.

In attendance at the meeting was the Nigerian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Audu Ogbeh, Danish Ambassador to Nigeria Torben Gettermann, and the Danish Consul General in Nigeria Per Christensen, among others.

In addition to strengthening the Nigeria-Denmark ties, the partnership presents sustainable development opportunities for Nigeria as the country explores various options aimed at the actualization of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 12, which seek to end hunger and achieve responsible consumption and productivity, respectively.

The World Food Programme had recently estimated that 815 million people – one in nine – still go to bed on an empty stomach; the United Nations has also reported that 5.1 million Nigerians may die from hunger in 2017.

While speaking to African Newspage, Kenneth Lindharth Madsen, Head of Department, Trade and Market Relations explained that the Danish Agriculture and Food Council accords priority to SDGs in consideration of their great importance. “We support projects that can lead to delivering on the SDGs. The Danish Agriculture and Food Council also use innovative technologies to drive the SDGs,” he said.
