Africa Day 2025: AAIPS Honours African Innovators, Creators, and Changemakers
As the continent commemorates Africa Day 2025, the Advisory Council of All Africa Intellectual Property Summit 2025 (AAIPS 2025) has described the day as not just ceremonial rather as “a rallying call, a moment of reflection, and a time for celebration to honour the resilience, creativity, and relentless innovation of Africans.”

The 6th All Africa IP Summit (AAIPS 2025) will be held in Dakar, Senegal, come November 12 -14, 2025, under the theme: “Building an Inclusive IP Ecosystem for Africa’s Future and the subtheme: What Kind of IP Ecosystem Do We Want for Africa?”
A statement by the AAIPS 2025 Advisory Council, signed by Prof Desmond Oriakhogba, Head, All Africa Intellectual Property Summit Advisory Council, said Africa Day 2025 reminds Africans of the vision that unites the continent—a prosperous, peaceful, and self-determined Africa created by its people, its values, culture, and its ingenuity—as enshrined in Agenda 2063.
“AAIPS 2025 is not just a conference. It is a Pan-African movement to mainstream IP into Africa’s industrial policies, trade frameworks, education systems, digital economy, creative sector, and overall sustainable development agenda,” the statement reads.
On this auspicious day, the Summit says it celebrates the thousands of individuals and institutions across the continent working tirelessly to protect, promote, and harness Africa’s Intellectual Property (IP) assets for the collective good of all. “These men and women, whether in the incubation centers, the courtrooms, the classrooms, the laboratories, the marketplaces, or behind a camera, are the real custodians of Africa’s future,” the statement said.
“We recognize the farmers preserving indigenous seeds and traditional knowledge; the legal experts defending patents, trademarks, and copyrights; the innovators and startups solving African problems with African solutions; the musicians, artists, and designers asserting Africa’s creative dominance globally; the youth-led tech ventures protecting digital IP across Africa’s cyberspace; the public institutions and policymakers championing IP reforms at national and regional levels; the women entrepreneurs breaking barriers with homegrown brands,” it concludes.
Recall, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has recently confirmed a strategic partnership with the 6th All Africa Intellectual Property (IP) Summit. This partnership, which aligns the Summit’s mission with AfCFTA’s ambitious agenda to harmonize Intellectual Property rules across the continent, promises to be a game-changer for Africa’s IP landscape, facilitating smoother trade, investment, and innovation flows.

Why Intellectual Property? Why Now?
Africa is not poor—it is richly endowed with natural, cultural, and intellectual capital. Yet, for decades, our ideas, brands, and creative works have been undervalued, under-protected, or outright stolen.
IP is not just a legal tool. It is an enabler of economic growth, competitiveness, and sovereign ownership.
- Under the AfCFTA, IP is now a core part of intra-African trade protocols.
- With digital transformation, African creatives and startups must secure their assets.
- In global markets, IP protection opens the door to finance, licensing, and technology partnerships.
The summit is Africa’s response—a platform to reshape narratives, bridge capacity gaps, and position African IP at the centre of continental development.
