Ahead of the upcoming UN Summit of the Future (SOTF) slated for September 22 -23, the Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN) is set to launch its SOTF Media and Information Service to offer civil society organizations, journalists and other stakeholders comprehensive resources, expert connections and content about the Summit and the Pact for the Future.

African Newspage is C4UN’s Africa regional partner for the Media and Information Service. The facilities to be offered by the service will include Summit of the Future Information Clearinghouse (ICH) bulletins i.e. in-depth analysis and updates on key milestones, decisions, and emerging themes of the Pact for the Future. The ICH Bulletins will serve as a one-stop shop for analyses on the evolution of the Pact, with comparative assessments of its various revisions, highlighting key changes and the implications of those changes.

The Service will also provide journalists direct access to experts on various topics related to the Pact for the Future, multilateralism, and global governance. Through this collaborative approach, C4UN aims to reinforce the UN’s messaging and ensure the information generated during the Summit are widely disseminated to foster a deeper understanding and engagement with the Pact.

Similarly, the Service will offer a range of customizable social media content, namely infographics, video clips and live updates on the X platform during key C4UN events as well as shareable graphics that media and CSOs can repurpose to ensure consistent visibility and support for the Summit’s objectives. This collaborative approach aims to reinforce the UN’s messaging, broadening the reach and impact of the Summit’s key outcomes, including the Pact.

Likewise, The Coalition will through its Media and Information Service throughout the Summit and its preceding Action Days (September 21 -22) issue daily updates and press releases, summarizing key developments and decisions to keep stakeholders informed about the SOTF. Additionally, the Service will facilitate access to multimedia non-copyrighted resources such as photos, quotes, short video interviews (on demand) for TV journalists as well as one-on-one interviews with civil society experts.

C4UN believes the Media and Information Service will “amplify diverse voices and strengthen global dialogue, ensuring that the critical conversations and decisions made during the SOTF are accessible, transparent, and inclusive.” The Coalition says “it recognizes the importance of ensuring diverse voices, particularly from the Global South, are heard and that accurate and timely information about the SOTF and the discourse around the Pact for the Future is accessible to all.” The Service will be supported by regional C4UN organizers who will conduct outreach to journalists and CSO participants, and monitor regional engagement and coverage of the SOTF by journalists.

The SOTF is a significant milestone in the UN’s efforts to address pressing global challenges and shape a sustainable future for all. The journey to the Summit began with the 2005 UN Summit’s call for reforms of the UN system, just as momentum for it was built around the UN75 Declaration in 2020 and the subsequent release of the Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda report in 2021.The SOTF will culminate in the adoption of an intergovernmental negotiated, action-oriented Pact for the Future, addressing critical areas such as sustainable development, financing for development, international peace and security, science, technology, innovation as well as digital cooperation.

The Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN) has continued to play a key role in building momentum and is actively engaged in the preparatory process of the SOTF, and was a major partner and co-organizer of the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference on the Summit of the Future, held in Nairobi on 9-10 May 2024. Through these partnerships and its ongoing initiatives, C4UN says it remains committed to strengthening the UN system and ensuring it remains an effective and accountable institution capable of addressing the pressing challenges of our time.
