In the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown, the shortage of Child Birth Spacing (CBS) commodities across Primary Health Care (PHCs) facilities of major local government areas of Kano state such as Gwale in the metropolis, threatens access to CBS services in the state.

Ahmad Adamu, the officer in charge of Ja’en PHC in Gwale said as CBS was been embraced by the people of Kano state they were receiving more clients leading to the shortage of CBS commodities in his facility. “We currently have a very high number of people seeking for CBS commodities in this facility because people from other LGAs like Madobi and even Kano Municipal come to get commodities here which causes the shortage,” he said.

Munirat Zakari, the personnel in charge of the family planning unit in the facility said the number of clients they were receiving had increased tremendously during the COVID- 19 lockdown, noting that the lockdown in the state didn’t hinder people from coming to access CBS commodities.

“The major challenge in this facility is the shortage of CBS commodities. We have so many clients but inadequate commodities to cater for them, we usually reach out to the local government PHC department to support us with commodities whenever we run out of stock. If we don’t get from them we just tell the clients to buy from pharmacies,” she said.
