“Injectables, most preferred child birth spacing method among our clients”

With the increasing advocacy for child birth spacing (CBS) in Kano, it has been revealed that most CBS clients in Nassarawa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state prefer the use of injectables CBS commodities, according to CBS providers at primary health care facilities in the LGA.

 

 

While speaking to a team of journalists advocating for CBS in Kano, working with the state ministry of health and The Challenge Initiative (TCI), Hindatu Mukhtar, a social mobilizer for CBS in Kano said a lot families had embraced CBS and were actively practicing it, having become aware of the benefits of spacing their births.

A client who regularly access FP commodities at Gwagwarwa PHC of Nassarawa LGA, said she prefers the injectable method of child birth spacing. “I have seen the importance of spacing in my children, that’s why I always come to access CBS commodities here. I have three children, and they all are adequately spaced,” she added.

Also speaking to journalists, Zainab Suleiman, the officer in charge of the family planning unit of the facility, said most clients prefer the use of injectables as a birth spacing method. When asked about the impact of COVID -19 on the number of clients she receives, she said they were receiving about 10 or less clients in a day, compared to the 20-30 clients they were receiving before Kano was placed on lockdown.

She however identified shortage of CBS commodities as a major challenge in the PHC.

Similarly, Fatima Kawaji, the officer in charge of the family planning unit at Kawaji PHC, said most clients prefer the use of injectables, compared to other methods of CBS. In Kawaji PHC, they received a total of 362 clients in January, 196 in February, 204 in March, 103 in April and 113 clients and more in May.
