The Kano High-Level Women Advocates (HiLWA), a network of influential women focused on high-level advocacy for gender-responsive change in the educational sector, in collaboration with the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), on Monday commenced a 2-day training workshop on leadership and advocacy skills for 96 female school administrators drawn from 6 Local Government Areas of the Kano state.
The training workshop which was aimed at strengthening the capacities of female leaders in the education sector on their roles in creating equity in the delivery of education was held under the aegis of phase 3 of UNICEF Nigeria’s Girls Education Project (GEP3), with the support of the UK’s Department for International Development (UK-DFID).
Ladidi Sani Fagge is the secretary of Kano HILWA who said the training was as a result of a rapid assessment carried out by HiLWA, which showed a serious gap in terms of numbers of females holding positions of leadership in Kano’s educational sector, adding that not a single woman was holding the position of education secretary in the 44 LGAs of Kano state while the ratio of male to female school administrators in primary and secondary schools was 9:1.
“We realized the need to build the administrative and leadership skills of our female school administrators so as to build their self-confidence and enhance their self-esteem to be better administrators as well as better role models for their female students. The training will enhance their participation in decision-making processes for girls’ education and also their participation in overall education governance in the state,” said Fagge.
Consequently, HiLWA and SUBEB hope the training would help build the self-esteem of female leaders in education sector; enhance skills of female leaders on leadership roles as well as create room for female leaders on voicing for demand for inclusion.
