DAG trains Kano journalists on gender-sensitive political reporting

The Dispute Resolution and Development Initiative also known as Democratic Action Group (DAG), in collaboration with the National Democratic Institute (NDI), this week hosted a 2-day training for a select group of Kano journalists, producers and anchors of political programmes on gender-sensitive reporting.

The objectives of the training was to create a better understanding of the importance of women’s political participation among media workers; inspire the journalists to utilize their platforms to amplify the call for women’s political participation and representation in governance processes, and ultimately, establish the Kano State Media Synergy Network for Promoting Women Political Representation and Participation.

In collaboration with NDI, DAG is implementing a 2-year Women in Politics (WiP) project focused on promoting women’s political participation and representation; the project is being funded by the UK Department for International Development (UK-DFID).

The training also had as participants, members of the Inter-Party Women’s Network (IPWN), a bipartisan network of Kano women politicians focused on supporting women’s political participation and representation, which culminated in the creation of the Media Synergy Network, whose members are journalists and members of IPWN.

Most political programmes in media organizations in Kano do not provide enough space for the voices and views of women politicians to be heard.  With this training, DAG and NDI hope the producers of the political programmes would be inspired to begin to create a better understanding of the importance of women’s political participation on their platforms, by promoting the voices of women politicians and amplifying the call for women’s political participation and representation.
