#AYSDGS 2018: Summit Team, UNFPA, Ghana SDGs host joint meeting

As part of efforts aimed at mobilizing stakeholders’ support for the 2nd edition of the African Youth SDGs Summit scheduled for 7th – 9th November, 2018 in Accra, Ghana, the Summit Team, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Ghana and the SDGs Advisory Unit at the Office of the Ghanaian President met Thursday at the Presidential Villa and reviewed progress made towards hosting the summit.

In his speech at the meeting, Dr. Eugene Owusu, Special Advisor to His Excellency Nana Akufo Addo, the President of Ghana on SDGs, applauded the Summit Secretariat and UNFPA for the progress made in terms of preparation for the Summit adding that his office was formed in August 2017 to serve as a technical anchor for SDGs-related advisory support to President Akufo Addo, in his global role as Co-chair of the UN Secretary General’s Eminent Group of Advocates on the SDGs.

Dr Owusu said as part of its core mandate, his unit had launched an initiative called “Africa Innovates for the SDGs” – an Africa-wide competition aimed at recognizing early-stage innovators whose innovative ideas contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. This he said would drive private-public sector support for the SDGs as well as increase understanding and awareness among the public and key stakeholders about the SDGs.

Speaking on behalf of the Country Representative of UNFPA in Ghana, Adjoa Nyanteng Yenyi also confirmed UNFPA’s support to the Summit adding that UNFPA had the mandate to empower young people thus would always make young people a priority in their activities, hence their commitment to supporting the Summit, technically and financially.

“In an era of an unprecedented number of youth living today in countries most in need of development, we are convinced that this generation will largely drive the outcome of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They will also be the ones who will have to live with the results”, Adjoa Nyanteng Yenyi noted.

In his response, Emmanuel Ametepey, Convener of the Summit, expressed his gratitude to the Ghana SDGs Advisory Unit and UNFPA for their support and inputs into the summit preparation process.
