UNFPA endorses 2018 African Youth SDG Summit

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Ghana has endorsed the organisation of the 2018 African Youth SDG Summit scheduled for November 6th to 9th, 2018 under the theme: “Partnership with Youth to Achieve the SDGs: Moving from Policy to Practice” in Accra, Ghana.

“We, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Ghana endorse the organization of the African Youth SDG Summit.  In an era of unprecedented number of adolescents living today – particularly in countries most in need of development, there is the realization that this generation will largely drive the outcomes of all the Sustainable Development Goals,” said a Statement of Endorsement by UNFPA Ghana.

“They will also be the ones who have to live with the results. Investment in their education, health and livelihoods as well as in organizations, initiatives and partnerships led by youth will be critical to achieving every one of these goals. We believe in the need for young people to begin [to] take leadership in issues that affect them. This initiative is driven by young people; we know that this is in the right direction towards a future that young people want.”

The UNFPA says it sees the African Youth SDG Summit as an avenue for young people to reflect on the current implementation status of the SDGs and hold governments in Africa accountable for the pledges they have made towards the achievement of the SDGs adding that engaging the youth in such a positive manner would make the SDGs attainable.

“The youth will own the process and the goals and work towards the expected success. We look forward to a successful summit with outcomes that will continue to spur young people and their governments to ensure that the SDGS are achieved and that no one is left behind,” the statement concluded.
