The Gambia is looking to rejoin the Commonwealth after a four-year absence. The new government made its official request shortly after a visit by Boris Johnson, the UK foreign secretary, to the West African nation in February.

The new government made its official request shortly after a visit by Boris Johnson, the UK foreign secretary, to the West African nation in February.

The UK is also hoping to strengthen ties with its former colonies as it starts the process to leave the European Union.

Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports from the capital Banjul.
